Ryan Ascolese

Ryan is a copyeditor and substantial editor who has edited nonfiction books and articles. She graduated from UC Berkeley Extension’s Professional Sequence in Editing.

Ryan has a bachelor’s degree in English literature and creative writing from Oberlin College, where she worked as a writing tutor for three years and was editor-in-chief of The Oberlin Review.

She completed her J.D. from New York University in 2013.

I had the pleasure of teaching Ryan Ascolese in UC Berkeley Extension’s Intermediate Editing Course. Ryan approached every copyediting assignment with zeal, focus, and determination. The time she contributed was evident in her careful edits and thoughtful queries. Throughout the course, Ryan honed her already impressive editing skills. She developed a unique editorial voice that was reflected in her cover letters and queries, one that evinced an unparalleled professionalism that spoke both of her passion for copyediting and of her drive for excellence. Ryan is a knowledgeable and fastidious copyeditor, an approachable professional, and an excellent communicator. She has a bright future ahead of her, and I would highly recommend Ryan as a copyeditor.

Services

  • Light Copyediting

A light copyedit fixes mechanical and grammatical errors and ensures consistency of typecoding, spelling, abbreviations, and visual elements across the text. Ryan will identify factual errors, permissions needed, and problematic writing. A light copyedit checks correlating parts (chapters, visual elements, table of contents, and lists) for consistency across the document. This service includes creating a style sheet, which compiles any choices made regarding spelling, style, numbers, definitions, names, capitalization, and abbreviations. The style sheet can be used by the author, proofreader, or any future editor for reference, and is extremely helpful in maintaining consistency between the text and any later additions.

  • Medium Copyediting

A medium copyedit provides additional feedback on the content of your copy on top of everything that’s included in the light copyedit. The medium copyedit will identify problematic writing (wordiness, repetition, lack of clarity), factual mistakes, and gaps in organization and logic. Fixing these problems is still mostly up to the client. The medium copyedit will also provide a glossary of terms, which can be used by the author, proofreader, or any future editor for reference.

  • Heavy Copyediting

The works! The heavy copyedit includes all the services provided in the light and medium packages, and in addition, revises problematic writing, corrects factual and logical errors, and reorganizes manuscripts as needed. Ryan will fix all the problems for you! With the heavy copyedit you get the works — all of the attention, love, and care your manuscript deserves.

  • Website and Online Content Copyediting

Your website represents your client’s first point of contact with your product or service, and it must make the best impression possible. Hire a professional editor to ensure your website’s writing, spelling, grammar, and style are clean and on point.

Past Projects

  • Polyamory and Parenthood

Jessica and Joseph Daylover came to me looking for a copyeditor before self-publishing their ebook, Polyamory and Parenthood. Because they were self-publishing, I was the first editor they worked with; I was able to help them with their substantive editing needs in addition to providing copyediting services. For example, I was able to help strengthen the book’s organization and clarify transitions between the points of view of multiple authors. I love working with self-published authors. Jessica and Joseph have written a beautiful, heartfelt book that is part memoir and part manual, and I am proud to have worked on it.

It is available for purchase from Amazon here and directly from the authors here.

The cover of the book "Polyamory and Parenthood: Navigating Non-Monogamy as Parents of Young Children." The book cover image features a man and woman having a picnic with two toddlers.
